Race day: a big HUD, a readable route, three looks refined
The pod race's place, lap, speed and next gate in numerals you can read on a tablet or a television; studs, chevrons and a lit gate to show the way through the orange canyons; and the contour, cel and painted looks after a pass.
▶ Go thererace2-1-hud The big race HUD a few seconds off the grid on the Emberline: the place (5th of 7) and the lap (1/3) in numerals sized to the screen at the top, the arrow to the next gate and its distance under them, the speed large at the right with the nitro bar. The line of text below keeps the full sentence. White studs mark the left edge of the track, cyan the right.▶ Go thererace2-2-slot The slot canyon at 204 km/h: chevron boards stand on the outside of the bend facing the pods, their amber arrows pointing the way the line turns, placed wherever the circuit's own heading turns by more than about eighteen degrees over the next ninety metres. The studs run on round the bend.▶ Go thererace2-3-gate The next gate on the long straight: its bar and caps lit, a gold wash across the gap and beams of light rising up both pylons, pulsing, so it reads from far down the canyon; the arrow under the place points at it.▶ Go thererace2-4-contour The contour look after its pass, from the looks gallery's spot on the Ternary Gorge: the lines every four blocks are crisp up close and gone by 900 cells, the bold ones every twenty fade by 1,500 cells and wherever they crowd closer than about ten pixels, so the far plain is calm.▶ Go thererace2-5-cel The cel look after its pass: the ink now lands only on slopes that turn away from the eye and fades with distance, so the distant plateau that went dark and patchy is one clean band of light.▶ Go thererace2-6-painted The painted look made stronger: warm sunlit faces, cool blue shade, lifted colour, broader brush dabs and long strokes, and the rock colour taking the steep faces sooner.
